Alfred Major Recreation Ground
The Parish Council owns 14 acres of green space in the middle of Cookham, called the Alfred Major Recreation Ground. This land was bequeathed to the village in the 1940s for the recreation and enjoyment of the community.
The Ground is regularly used by Cookham Dean Football Club for their matches. The Children’s Play Area has various items of equipment including several for under 5’s.
A picnic bench has recently been added. In the summer, the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead organize holiday activities for young people.
We have a hard surface Basketball/Netball Court and an Adult Keep Fit Area, incorporating a variety of apparatus to improve fitness.
In 2012 the Parish Council installed a Half-Pipe Skate Ramp and an All Weather Cricket Wicket. Bookings can be made for the wicket by Schools Clubs or other organisations. Please contact the Parish Office for details.
The Alfred Major Recreation Ground can be accessed via High Road and Hillcrest Avenue.
Officer and Byelaws/Rules for the Recreation Ground
A few weeks ago, the Parish Council appointed a Proper Officer to help enforce the Byelaws governing the Common and the Moor with a view to helping their owners (Odney Estates and the National Trust respectively) keep the Common and the Moor the way residents of the Parish want them. You will know him because he will be wearing a Cookham Parish Council shirt/uniform.
A new notice board was put up on Odney Common to join the one on the Moor displaying the Byelaws. There are also signs on the main gate to the bridge onto Odney Common and the railings next to it. The most relevant Byelaw at present seems to be the one forbidding fires (inc. barbecues).
After careful thought and debate, the Council has also updated the Rules governing use of the Alfred Major Recreation Ground. These are posted at all entrances to the AMRG. The Council’s Officer(s) are adding it to their remit of enforcing the rules and preventing anti-social behaviour.
Please help us to ensure that everyone can make the most of these lovely open spaces by complying with the Byelaws/Rules.
